Hopelessly Devoted | Eris x Reader
Eris x Reader x Azriel | You're hopelessly devoted to Azriel, suspecting heâs your true love. Meanwhile, Eris is hopelessly longing after you. aka Eris being your mate but you're too infatuated with Az to notice.
warnings: slight angst, reader being a bit delulu
*also disclaimer that I am no expert in astrology and my knowledge is usually what I gathered from friends or tiktok so if I'm wrong, please correct me but do it nicely pls bc I am sensitive lol*
a/n: I wasn't sure whether to include Az or not in the pairing but I liked the idea of leaving this fic up to your interpretation. Anyway, happy reading! <3
As you entered the Night Courtâs observatory, you traced your fingers along the edge of the great celestial map laid before you. You could feel the soft hum of magic beneath your fingertips, still smell the faintest hint of sageâa remnant of your fatherâs last ritual here. For centuries, your father has served as the Night Courtâs astrologer. Heâs guided and advised High Lord Rhysand and on occasion, Keir, the steward of the Court of Nightmares.
Above you, constellations and planets danced across the domed ceiling, the stars gleaming as though they were ready to whisper secrets just for you. You took a deep breath, centering yourself, and placed a palm flat against the massive zodiac wheel etched onto the floor. It began to glow, a warm golden light tracing symbols of the zodiacs and planets.
âStars above and stars below, reveal the path I seek to know,â you quietly murmured.
The markings on the wheel shifted in response, aligning and realigning with clicking sounds, the warm golden light following. Then, your own chart had appeared, shimmering above you. It was a translucent web of stars and planets connected by silvery lines. Youâve read your birth chart many times, become so familiar with it that you knew it by heart even.
But tonight, you needed the extra reassurance. So you looked up, watching as the planets moved slowly. Your heartbeat a little faster as you spotted Jupiter making transit through your seventh house. The promise of growth, abundance, luck and most important of all, love filled the air.Â
You slipped a small vial from the hidden pocket of your cobalt blue dress. The words Love Potion No.9 gleamed on the glass, the dark red liquid swirling. It was the enchanted perfume youâd bought from a witch last weekâa little love potion designed to make you irresistibly alluring to your soulmate.
You felt a bit foolish, seeking a witch for guidance on love of all matters. Witches were frowned upon in the Court of Nightmares, after all. But impatience had finally nudged you to venture beyond the courtâs dark mountain and into the surrounding forests, in search of someone who could help.
âSeek the one who walks between light and shadow with a mask of cool indifference, where fire meets the edge of night. There your heart shall find its match,â she had told you as she handed you the enchanted perfume.
Her words had only confirmed what you had been suspecting for years, centuries even.
Azriel was your soulmate.Â
Azriel, the very embodiment of cool indifference, wore a mask of stoicism in the Court of Nightmares, just as High Lord Rhysand did. But his hazel eyes always seemed to burn with a hidden fire. And when you were alone with him, away from the cold nobility of the Night Court, Azriel would let that mask slip, revealing a kinder side that laughed and smiled with you. He was your friend and not only did he literally walk among shadows, he wielded them. It had to be him!
And then, there was your birth chart. Your seventh house lay in Taurusâa sign ruled by Venus. With Venus positioned in your twelfth house, everything pointed to the idea that your future soulmate would bring your happiness and pleasure. And since you met Azriel all those years ago during a counseling your father led, happiness had been an emotion you'd grown more familiar with.
The stars couldnât have given you a clearer message!
**
There was a flutter in your stomach as you approached Azriel. The two of you had been stealing glances at one another, as you usually did anytime you found yourselves in the same place. He looked as beautiful as ever. As dreamy as ever.Â
Though your High Lord and High Lady had moved to the center of the ballroom for a dance, he had stayed by the dais. âHello,â you greeted him with a small smile.
Azriel turned to you, that mask of his slipping for just a brief moment to smile back at you. He took the extra wine glass in your hold, murmuring a small thanks. He turned his head back to the dance floor, attentive to his High Ladyâs whereabouts. But he shifted closer to you, the coolness of his shadows caressing your bare arm and you couldnât help but wonder if the perfume was working.
âYou look nice,â he commented.
âThanks.â A blush rose to your cheeks. Youâd taken care to match your dress to the exact shade of his siphons. And he noticed. âSo do you.â
âI wear this all the time.â Azriel replied drily, referring to his usual Illyrian leathers.
âYeah, I know.â You cursed yourself inwardly for the awkward response, then shifted closer, leaning toward him. âDo I smell to you?â
Azriel paused, his shadows brushing close, as if curious themselves. âNo,â he said after a moment.
âOh.â Disappointment seeped into your voice despite your best efforts, and his gaze shifted to you, a hint of a frown in his brows.
âDo you want to smell?â
Thereâs a teasing edge to his tone, a subtle quirk of his lips. You shook your head, letting out a small, nervous laugh. "No. I just wanted to know if I smelled anyâŠdifferentâŠ,â and then, in a much quieter tone, you murmured, âto you.â
Azriel considered your words. He looked to you in what seemed like permission. You gave a nod of your head and he leaned in, his warm breath sending a shiver down your spine. âYou smell the same to me.â At the breath you let out, he quickly added: âwhich is good by the way. You smell nice.â
âOh, okay,â you smile, albeit a bit awkwardly, the flutter you had felt in your stomach earlier twisting into a knot.Â
ïżœïżœY/n, is everything alright?â Azriel asked softly.
âYeah, I just thoughtââ You stopped, not sure how to explain without sounding foolish. It wasnât like you could admit to feeling disappointed over the lack of reaction from an enchanted perfume youâd spent quite a fortune on. Especially when he was the sole purpose for it. Had the witch scammed you?
Azriel waited for you patiently, concern flashing in his eyes. Maybe the perfume hadnât worked, but the stars and planets had never led you astray. That still had to mean something, right?Â
âIâm fine.â You finally said.
âAre you sure?â
The way he was looking at you had warmth creeping up your neck and settling deeper in your cheeks. âYeah.â
A single shadow curled around Azrielâs ear and in the blink of an eye, his head turned. Your gaze followed his, to where Rhysand and Feyre were standing. Rhysand sent him a slight nod and with a sigh, Azriel returned it.
âSorry, I have to go.â Azriel said, quickly downing the remaining wine from his glass.
You held out your hand, offering to take it for him.
âThank you. Iâll be back. Donât have too much fun without me, alright?â
âIâll try not to,â you replied.
You watched Azriel disappear into his shadows before turning away from the dais and making your way to the refreshments table. You were eager for a refill on your glass. Perhaps a little more wine would help ease the sting of disappointment. But heâd said heâd be back, hadnât he?
As you scanned the room, you noticed your father in conversation with one of Keirâs sons and your mother eyeing potential suitors for your older brother. As an elite warrior of the Darkbringers, he had no shortage of admirers, and it was only a matter of time before your mother secured him a matchâperfect or not.
You suspected youâd be next on her matchmaking list, so you busied yourself with small talk among familiar ladies. Conversations were always a mind-numbing, the ladies your age exchanging beauty tips that centered around the maleâs eye or fawning over this seasonâs most eligible males. Which this season just so happens to be your brother. Gross. If only they knew him the way you didâŠ.
Second to him was Bretâor some equally uninspiring name. A Scorpio, of all things, which clashed miserably with your chart. Not that it mattered. You had no interest in any noble of the Court of Nightmares. Or any male here. Most, if not all, were cruel and narcissists, only viewing females as child bearers and nothing more.Â
There was a reason why this court was burdened with the title âNightmares.â And to marry someone from here would mean never waking up from this darkness. No stars to light your night skies, only endless shadow and despair.
So, youâd taken fate into your own hands. Youâd turned to your birth chart, hoping the stars would lead you somewhere beyond Hewn City, beyond this never-ending nightmare. And they had. They led you to believe it was Azriel. Azriel, who was not only honorable and single but also, technically, part of the Court of Dreams. Heâd been your friend for centuries, seeing you for who you are rather than an object or prize like most males here.Â
As you sneak away from the conversation, you bump into somethingâsomeone. Behind you, a deep voice huffed a low, mocking chuckle. âEasy there, librarian.âÂ
You could recognize that voice anywhere, could recognize the heat radiating from him. It pressed down on you, leaving you simmering with irritation.
âIâm a libra, not a librarian.â You bit out. It hasnât even been a minute and already you were exhausted by the searing presence behind you. âAnd besides, to you, itâs Lady Y/N.â
When you turned, you found Eris looming over you. His amber eyes gleamed with a familiar, infuriating mischief. He gave you that signature smirk of his, the one that made his sharp features all the more arrogant. âSuch a harsh tone. Hardly fitting for a Lady.â
Your gaze hardened into a glare, only to have it stray toward a movement across the ballroom. A flicker of shadow caught your attention, and your heart gave a small, hopeful jump as your gaze softened. There he wasâAzriel.
He had returned to the ballroomâŠbut he hadnât returned to youâŠ
Eris raised a glass to his lips, amber eyes flicking lazily between you and Azriel. âDisappointment doesnât suit you.â
âIâm not disappointed.â You muttered hastily.
He gave a scoff, his smirk widening with dark amusement. âPlease. I can practically feel it.â
âLiar,â you shot back.Â
âAzriel said heâd find me again and unlike you, heâs a male of his word,â you continued, not sure why you were telling Eris this. âHeâsâŠâ
Your words trailed off as you watched Azriel, who stood next to Nesta and Elain. He laughedâactually laughed!-- at something Elain had said, shadows absent from his frame as his focus remained solely on her. You couldnât miss the soft smile playing on his lips, nor the warmth in his gaze. Did he do that with every female he knew? You thought he reserved that just for youâŠ
The bubble in your chest slowly deflated.
âKeep dreaming,â Eris huffed out. He seemed to take special pleasure in your reaction. It prompted your cheeks to flush but this time, with irritation.
âOh, go away, you prick,â you said, rolling your eyes. âYou donât understand.â
âOh, wouldnât I?" he replied, leaning closer, his sharp gaze burning into you. You missed the flash of longing in his amber eyes, too focused on Azriel. Or the way the words that had been on the tip of his tongue faltered as your scent suddenly overwhelmed him, his breath hitching slightly.
 "You smell.â
âGee, thanks,â you mumbled absently.
âI didnât mean it like that,â he said, his voice gruff and pupils flaring. âYou smell different tonightâŠgood...â
You blinked, barely processing his words. Was he actually being nice to you? In all the years youâve known him, heâs always had snark remark after snark remark for you. The way it would roll smoothly off his tongue always left you wondering if heâd rehearse them for his visits to the Court of Nightmares.Â
You fidgeted, fingers grazing your wine glass as you cast a hesitant glance back at Azriel. Your chest tightened as he remained engrossed in conversation with Elain. Turn around, please. But he hadnât even looked your way once.Â
Eris stepped in front of you, drawing your attention back to him. His gaze roamed over you, your dress. He took in the shade and he knew why you had chosen itâand for whom. "You know," he said, his gaze lingering on your face. "Red suits you far better.â
âAnd there he is, youâre backâŠâ
"Iâm serious. Thisâ" He gestured to your gown with a slight grimace, his fingers brushing the silk fabric in disappointment. "This color washes you out. Red would bring out the color of your eyesâŠâ
Your jaw clenched but you remained silent, refusing to admit that his words stirred something within you. Eris was insufferable, arrogant, and yet you couldn't deny his eye for detail. He, after all, was always dressed impeccably in the finest Autumn attire. But you would never give him the satisfaction of admitting he might be right.
His smirk widened, as if he knew exactly what you were thinking. âDo you want to know another thing?â
âNo,â you said immediately.
But he leaned in anyway, his breath warm against your ear. âYouâre hopelessly devoted to a male who doesnât even look your way.â
Your mouth opened, brows furrowing in protest, but he went on. His smirk softened, fading into a half-smile. One that didnât reach his eyes, dimming the fire that usually burned so brightly there. And then, in a much quieter, reluctant tone, he murmured, âAnd I am no different, it seems.â
"ButâŠ" You stammered, resisting the urge to steal another glance at Azriel. "He does look my wayâŠsometimes.â
Erisâs smile faded, his expression tightening. A flicker of pain crossed his face. So brief, you almost thought you imagined it. "Youâre delusional.â
âAnd youâre insufferable.â You scoffed, heart pounding.
âBetter than being a fool.âÂ
The mocking tone was there but the usual sharpness had been softened by a strange, subtle sadness. Was this⊠pity?
You swallowed, lifting your chin defiantly. âThe stars wouldnât lie to me,â you said, though the conviction in your voice wavered. âHeâs the one for me.â`
You met his eyes then and Eris held your gaze. His amber eyes warm and molten, the intensity of his stare prickling at your skin. An unsettling flutter erupted in your stomach, rising to your chest. A feeling you quickly dismissed when you felt something cool brush against your arm.
âIs he bothering you, y/n?â
Eris scoffed at the sudden presence beside you. It sickened him to see that sweet, adoring look on your face, the triumphant gleam in your eyes as you looked up at Azriel. The sight made Eris grit his teeth. His instincts roared at him, the fire in his veins was scorching.
You blinked, snapping out of your daze, realizing both males were waiting for your answer. âNo,â you said but the way you shifted to stand behind Azriel said otherwise.
Azrielâs gaze hardened as he looked toward Eris. âStay away from her,â he seethed.
A low growl rumbled from Erisâs chest as he took a step forward, his amber eyes flaring with rage. Though not as tall as Azriel, he seemed to tower over him at this moment. His teeth flashed as his lips curled into a snarl. âI do not take orders from bastards like you.â
Azrielâs wings tensed, threatening to unfurl and the movement of his shadows quickened. Like a storm ready to unfold. But before it could, you placed a hand on his arm. Right over one of his glowing siphons that seemed to be growing hotter and hotter, daring to match the fire coursing through Erisâs veins.
âAz, donât,â you told him gently, not wanting to draw any attention to the three of you. You felt his muscles ease under your touch, his shadows brushing over your hand in agreement.
Erisâs gaze dropped to your hand on Azrielâs arm, his expression darkening into something unreadable. He exhaled sharply, turning his head as though trying to shake off whatever thought had crossed his mind.
When he looked back, his features had shifted into his usual cool mask, that infuriating smirk sliding back into place. He looked right at you.
âWhen you wake up from this deranged dream of yours, come find me.â
You watched him, feeling a strange, unwelcome tug in your chest as he turned to leave. Perhaps, one day youâd realize that the enchanted perfume you had bought was not a scam.Â
And that the male you searched through the stars and planets for was not the one standing beside you, but the one whoâd just walked away.
a/n: sorry if you're not a libra, I just thought it'd be funny for Eris to purposely say reader's sign wrong as he knows astrology is a huge influence on her.

after being sealed away for 150 years, choso couldn't keep his hands to himself. especially when it came towards you. the touches were innocent at firstâ fingertips ghosting over your cheeks, knuckles brushing against yours, arm grazing against each other whenever he walked a little too close.
and, over time, with your permission, the touches became more frequent, lingering a bit longer. exploring and familiarizing just how smooth and soft your skin was, how the scent of your body splash complimented you, how right it felt touch another person.
with more time, choso began to reflect on just how touch-starved he had been while sealed away, and his wandering hands reflected this. his touches grew to be more frenziedâ slipping beneath your shirt, kneading at the soft dough of your breasts, his mouth devouring each and every whimper, moan, and plea that escaped yours. his obsession to feel you became insatiable.
through some guidance, choso became an expert on the subject of your anatomy. he knew where to touch you, how you liked it, what you preferred. with each kiss, each wandering touch, choso reveled in the pleasurable sensations that came with skin-to-skin contact. how he had gone so long without physical human connection, he wasn't sure. and now that he had it, had experienced it, he wasn't letting go.
"can i touch you here?" choso whispered one night, the heat of his mouth radiating through the thin fabric of your panties. his hooded eyes peered up at you, his cheeks flushed and lips bruised from how long you two had been making out. he could smell your arousal through the stained cloth, a wet patch having formed over your crotch. his mouth was already salivating.
"please, darling, i promise t' be a good boy. promise promise promise. just wanna make you feel goodâ " he almost whimpered, bottom lip jutting out with a pout. "just wanna show you how much i love youâ you know i love you, right? yeah yeah, i love you so much, honeyâ never loved anyone more, never willâ best thing t' ever happen to me; just wanna show ya how special you areâ"

Strange Dream.
Prince Zuko x Spirit!Human!Reader
-⥠I just had a thought and ran with it. Havenât watched the show in so long so not the best expert. But my dad remembers it all- anyway. Idk what Iâm doing with this.
-⥠words: 564
-⥠warnings: defensive zuko, kinda fluffy.
the forest was cold and wet, the only thing to keep him comfort was knowing his uncle was beside him. but still, he didnât feel like himself anymore after hearing what his father & sister had been planning. he worked himself to the edge each day hoping to go home and be welcomed back to take his place by his father. and yet there was no truth to that promise.
his eyes feel shut when he laid down by the fire, he was so drained. the past few days and have been hell for them. he wanted to let his thoughts go and the painful stabbing at his heart fade so he slept peacefully.
and he didnât expect to be awaken with the feelings of a warm and caring hand on his cheek. zuko shot up from the ground and startled the person kneeling over him with wide eyes. the stranger jumps back while he raising his hands and ready to burn them. but there was something about them, they didnât seem dangerous but in factâŠstrange.
their clothes were silk white and their eyes made him feel warm underneath their gaze, like he wasnât a monster at all but something to be understood.
just before he could ask them a question the area he was in had him look around. it was hazy and more beautiful, the trees greener and he could feel natural energy on his skin. his uncle was no where to be seen but neither was the small camp they had set up.
âWhere am I?â he spoke with growing concern. the person smiles and titles their head up at him.
âYouâre sleeping, but at the moment I am here. in your mind.â you open your hands to show the area. this forest was special to your people and when a soul needs guidance you are willing to help.
âTell me, is there something I can help you with?â your soft smile and happy attitude made him hesitate to let you in. who in the hell were you? and why did he feel so drawn to youâŠ
âNo, I have everything under control. So you can leave.â Your face didnât drop a bit as you continued to sit there and look up at him with beautiful eyes. âI wouldnât be here if you didnât want me to.â his eyes glare down at you and he sighs in frustration. and you knew right then he was going to be a hard cookie to crack but you liked a challenge.
âJust leave me alone! Get out of my head.â He hit his head slightly while raising his voice but his tone didnât scare you. you had many like him before but they all caved. all they needed was a ear to listen.
âKnow this, prince Zuko. Many have denied what they needed and came to ruin, youâll let me in sooner or later.â letting out a breath as your fingertips start to light up underneath your skin.
âAnd Iâll be here willing to listen.â you point your fingertip at him.
Zuko doesnât have time to answer before he starts falling backwards towards the ground only to not meet the stern ground but to be reawaken. he was no longer sleeping but back in the wet forest with his uncle giving him a curious stare.
it was a strange dream, with a even stranger person.

a heart of a jack of clubs
(7,4k words. angst through and through, somehow ambigious ending. slowburn. so slow, it takes them quarter of a century to fuck.)
when youâre almost 8 months pregnant, you meet scaramouche.
itâs pretty awkward, actually - you sit under a tree in a chinju forest, trying to breathe, but you do a pretty bad job at that. everything hurts so much, you hoped no one would hear your crying, but gods like to laugh at you. you close your eyes from time to time, hoping you would never open them again. you never knew that giving birth is such a challenge, you only heard of it, and you thought youâve prepared yourself. but it was supposed to be a month more untill you meet your child. and now, well, yeah. nothing is ever right in your life.
when you open your eyes again, after getting so tired of screaming and maybe losing your consciousness for a minute, thereâs three of them right in front of you: a little girl with soft white hair in a pretty green dress, touching your forehead. a man with a stark red strand in his light grey hair, his gaze is so worried and pained. the third man stays behind those two, and you canât even comprehend how he looks like.
âi think sheâs dyingâ girls says a little too brightly. the man with white hair looks a little bit bewildered.
âdonât say it like that!â
âdoes it matter?â the third man says. âopen your eyes, kaedehara. she is dying.â
âstill, you can hurt her with this even moreâ the kind man sits in front of you - his touch is blessedly chill against your feverish skin. âlady, can you hear me? can you understand what i say to you?â
you can only blink slowly in response. because of the pain you canât really scream anymore, but tears start streaming down your face once again. you want to ask them to kill you, because youâve suffered for god knows how many hours by now. maybe you even do ask them, considering that the girl now frowns, the kind man tries to wipe your tears away and even the third man stiffens because of your cries.
âi am no expert, but i think itâs a preterm birth.â girl says, her tone really sad now âshe really might die. we need to move her in some more of a clean space, quickly.â
âwe canât really move her, you know?â girl turns her head and you guess her gaze makes the third man sigh loudly. âokay, okay, donât look at me like thatâ you hear his steps and he finally bends in front of you. you canât really see his face because of how ridiculously big his hat is, but his voice is much softer now when he speaks to you directly âhold on my shoulders, lady, weâre gonna take a quick ride.â
you do as he says, feeling another wave of terrible pain shuttering your body. almost laying on his chest, yet you hear no heartbeat. his skin velvety and cool under your fingertips, when he easily lifts you from the ground, and from now on you donât remember anything.
***
you took your son outside to play in grass, when scaramouche returns from sumeru. unexpectedly, as always.
hereâs the trick: even if you can say now, that kazuha is your friend (and thank god for him, heâs the best human who ever walked this earth), nahida is probably your friend too, even though you donât see her a lot and sheâs much, much more reserved than kazuha (who is a grown man, despite his height), scaramouche is an interesting case. youâve never ever asked him, who he even was, what he did for life. you felt like you had no right, since youâve been nobody yourself. heâs just kinda...there. you donât know what to think of him. you canât label it, so you just donât do it.
he visits you regularly. heâs at your house more often, then even kazuha; he has more than enough duties in sea, and scaramouche doesnât. he just does as he pleases. and it seems like he wants to be near you a lot of the times. you donât mind, really: heâs a nice company, very useful and not overbearing. he also seems to know a lot about caring for kids, which you find unexpected, but again, you need that guidance.Â
even if in the beginning you thought he was the one with a cold heart, now youâre definitely not sure. you gave birth that night and youâve slept for over two weeks after. nahida told you, that she put you in that state, since she was afraid, you die. your body was so fragile after giving birth, she spent days and nights healing you. kazuha was busy building you new home with the help of the beidouâs crew - you donât want to know, how nahida learnt, that you were homeless. in that time, scaramouche was the one who cared for your son: he fed him, lulled him to sleep, checked on his health. youâve learnt that only months after, nahida told you that. but you kinda got the feeling anyway.
you could easily say, scaramouche liked spending time with the kid. he brought him presents anytime he visited. expensive toys from fontaine, liyue and snezhnaya, clothes from natlan, candies and some delicious food from sumeru. he says, he doesnât care about mora, and it looks like he doesnât lie, but you still feel uneasy with how much he spends on your son. but again, he helped you. he still helps you a lot. weeks, then months go by, and youâre so used to him at your side, you start to feel a bit lost when he finally leaves again. you know heâll return, yet you still wonder, what if not.
âlook whoâs all grown up nowâ your son squeals in delight when he hears scaramoucheâs voice, and you turn your head too, because your son tends to have better sight than you, he also hears a lot more than you.Â
scaramoucheâs on his way to your little home, and you stand up to greet him. you actually stop, because he stumbles funnily, when you come near him. itâs as if he wanted to hug you, forgetting himself for a second. you see no problem though. you would hug him, if he wanted you to.Â
itâs always a happy time, when heâs at your home - playing with your son, while you make dinner, then telling you both his stories. theyâre quite endearing, and he has such a nice voice, while telling them, itâs as if he was truly a balladeer. your son loves listening to him, he actually likes to sit on his lap and watching him speak. you usually stand near the kitchenette, cup of tea in your hands, watching them talk.
it brings you somewhere close to longing for something you never had. but you, weakly, love that feeling. and sometimes scaramouche looks at you strangely, like he wants to ask, what are you thinking, but even if he did ask, you donât know what to tell him. you donât know what you want of him yourself.
you love when scaramouche comes to your home. that you know for sure.
this time is only slightly different. your son is sleeping soundly in your arms, when you want to bring him to his bed. you hear scaramoucheâs voice near your ear:
âlemme hold him. pleaseâ
you look at him with wide eyes.
he actually rarely took your son in his arms. it wasnât like he didnât want to, more out of his respect for you as your sonâs mother.Â
he holds your son with such gentleness, caressing his hair through his fingers. you smile, because of how fond you find that gesture. he studies the kidâs face for a minute, and then he looks straight in your eyes:
âyou really love him, huh?â
âwhat? of course i do. i am his momâ
ânot every mother loves her childâ and you know, thereâs a bad, bad story behind those words, yet you say nothing on that matter.Â
âyou love him tooâ you say instead. itâs as clear as the sky is blue to you. itâs clear for pretty anybody - read, nahida and kazuha - too.
and yet, for a second, he looks like a kid, who got cought stealing candies before dinner.
âbullshit. iâm just helping you because youâre such a baby and know nothingâ
âyeah. thatâs why you asked to hold my sonâ
âexactlyâ
âokay. give him back to me thenâ
he actually takes a step back. you think itâs funny how he looks like he will fight you if you try to snatch a baby back in your arms. so you laugh quietely.
âscaramoucheâ you call him.
âwhatâ he snaps back, but quiet enough not to wake your son. you take one step towards him, then another, untill you can hug him lightly, and heâs so stiff in your arms, like a porcelain doll.
âitâs okay. you can love my son too,â you whisper, feeling how his head falls on your shoulder. âi allow that.â
you stay like that for long, long moments, and youâre actually so surprised that your heart doesnât beat so fast. itâs just so calm to you, being near him.
âi wanted to say to you that itâs okay to stay here, you knowâÂ
âi always stay, stupidâ
âno. i mean for real. i know you donât want that, probably. but you can always stay with us. for however longâ
you hear him laugh bitterly.
âyou say you know i donât want to stay? so funnyâ
âwhy?â
âbecause it means you truly know nothingâ
***
your first kiss with scaramouche happens when your son is five and he learns that everyone has a father, except him.
interestingly enough, itâs kazuha, who tells you that. he visited you again, while being in inazuma, as he always did for past years. your bond only grew stronger with years, but you know that itâs nothing, comparing to his bond with scaramouche. they werenât even that good of a friends. itâs more likely that something tragic bonded them, and youâre partly glad you know nothing about it.
youâve learned a lot about scaramouche in past years while living with him. he still left sometimes, when nahida needed him or his duties called, but he lived with you for much longer. his trips were much shorter too. you fell into some kind of ruitine, and with that came few things you needed to know about each other.
he never actually hid anything from you, itâs just that you felt uncomfortable being persistent, so you learned thing at a time. youâve learnt he doesnât need to eat or drink, but he likes to cook and does this often. youâve learnt he doesnât care if itâs hot or cold outside, heâs fine anytime. if listen closely, you can hear how his joints quietely screeching everytime he moves. his skin is slightly velvety to touch, like cold porcelain. he sleeps with his eyes open.
heâs not a human, not really. you thought that would worry you more, with everything youâve been through, yet you just... donât care.
âi never thought i would tell you this, but it doesnât matter. youâve learned this yourself!â kazuha says, and you stand outside the room, hearing everything they say, hoping, they wonât see you. âyou know, how much nahida loves you, and i know you love her - donât you dare to interrupt me right now. it doesnât always have to be blood. donât fool me and say you donât love the kid.â
âi doâ scaramouche says after a long pause âand iâm not his father. thereâs no need for a father at all. theyâre useless.â
âbut he wants one. he wants you to beâ
âhe has a father, he was born somehow, wasnât he? do you see him here? me too. so thatâs what iâm not. iâm not his father.â
you feel so much pain you canât breathe.
you donât even go out to say your goodbye to kazuha. you just sit on a stone near the cliff, watching foxes running and playing around. you hate them with your whole being.
âso you heard everythingâ
itâs rare now to see scaramouche parading in his hat and fancy outfit. his hair grew a bit longer, he wears no hat, and his shorts and shirt are very simple. his haori is a present from you on his birthday. he wears it religiously.
and youâre pained.
âi haveâ
âi see. may i sit near you?â
you nod, turning your head away.
he sits silently next to you. heâs still the most pleasant person to just sit next to in complete silence, and you despise yourself for how weak you were. you gave up on being close to him, but your son? what he ever did to him?
âactually, i genuinely hate inazumaâ scaramouche says suddenly - your heart clenches, because yeah, of course, why would he love it here? you live in a deep of a chinju forest, in small wooden house with your son. he has an opportunity to visit anywhere he wants. whay would he want to even be there, of all places? âi hate it so fucking much, you canât imagine.â
âi truly canâtâ
âyeah, you canâtâ he says again, no mockery in his voice. âthis is the place where i was born and left behind. the only thing i ever wanted is to set everything up in flames here. and i felt like that for years. centuries.â
your heart sinks.
âi thought youâre i donât know? twenty five?â kazuha is around thirty, so youâve guessed heâs also around his age, even with how young he looks. scaramouche chuckles.
âyeah. slightly older than thatâ he looks at you with unreadable smile âstill, iâm here. any ideas, why?â
âyouâre masochistic?â
âno, anything else? come on, you can do better than thatâ his smile disappears as fastly, as it was brought. âhere i thought you would explain me whyâ
you donât answer anything to that. he chuckles again - more bitterly this time.
âi meant what i said. kid has a father. a shitty one, i assume. i donât want to be anything like that. you need to believe meâ he takes your hand in his and squeezes it slightly, making you look at him. and heâs so serious and worried right now, you feel your heart might explode. âi wish only the best on you two. i wouldnât do anything to harm you. and you donât have to tell me anything. i know a thing or two about how shitty those kitsune bastards can be. in the end, itâs your life, and iâm no one to you, you owe me nothingâ
âare you serious right now?!â you almost yell, yanking your hand away. âyouâve lived here for five years! five! youâve teached my son how to read, youâve played with him, you brought him gifts, you brought me gifts, and you sleep in my room on a bed that stands next to mine, and you are no one to me?! you fucking selfish little-â you stop only when you hear him laughing. it makes you even more mad, but it disappears the moment you see how glassy his eyes are. and he keeps laughing and laughing and laughing, untill he stops completely.
âi do sound like my motherâ he whispers, more to himself than to you. and then he looks at you again, his eyes are so clear and sad for how badly he hurt you. âi shouldnât have said thatâ
the worst part is that you donât feel hurt for yourself. you feel bad for your kid.
you never planned on having kids. your plan was to become a priestess in a great shrine, which is really ironic, considering of course it was a kitsune who made you change your mind. who made you drop everything you planned behind, to run away with him from your hometown, only for him to drop you the second he got what he wanted from you. and maybe he didnât even want anything at all. probably that, because thatâs just how cruel yokais can be. it was all just a fun game, and you kinda lost. you would strongly disagree it was fun at all.
thatâs the reason your pregnancy was so difficult. the baby was just too strong for your human body. he keeps getting stronger every day, and you were so thankful to scaramouche because he seemed to know how to handle your son. heâs so strong willed and independent even now, that you need help. because yeah, you do not know how to raise a child.
your son looks like a normal kid, except for his now little dark claws. they showed when he became four, and he cried that night, thinking heâs very ugly now. and you know why heâs thinking that. some might say heâs scary and looks like a demon, but even though your sonâs eyes are blood red with a vertical pupil, they remind you strangely of kazuha, of all people. your son is half yokai, yeah, and people might be scared of him, but his gaze holds no malice. heâs the sweetest boy, who loves you deeply, who loves scaramouche, nahida and kazuha. you hope, heâll be like kazuha, because his kindness and gentleness is seen in him even now, and you donât want to hate your kid just because for who his father is.
the dinner is very silent - even your son keeps it low, because he somehow sensed that something is wrong between you two. he thanks you for food, kisses you on a cheek while saying goodnight and then turns to his room.
âdonât you wanna say goodnight to me too?â scaramouche asks suddenly. your son turns to him, surprised. ever so gentle, scaramouche rarely openly show affection towards kid, even when your son wanted him to.
âcan i?â he asks hesitantly. scaramouche smiles lightly and extends his hand.
âcome here, give your dad a hugâ
you drop the plate you were holding, and your son literally runs towards scaramouche. you know if it was you he would probably hit you (not intentionally, but heâs that strong at his age), but scaramouche catches him easily, and it reminds you of a day when he brought you here just as easily. you chew your bottom lip, while watching, how happily your son hugs said man, and that man, while smiling, looks you right into the eyes, as if asking for your forgiveness.
you turn away.
scaramouche usually reads after the dinner, yet youâre not surprised to find him in your room. he looks up at you - itâs late in the evening, your son is very much asleep, so itâs quiet and cozy here.
âthat was super weird.â
âwhich part?â
âiâm not his father. iâm not anyoneâs fatherâ he frowns âand it felt really weird saying things like thatâ
âoh, reallyâ
âdonât fucking laugh at me, womanâ you think itâs adorable, how his harsh words donât match the soft tone of his voice. âiâm not-â
âscaramoucheâ
âwhat?â
âcan i kiss you?â
youâre afraid you broke him for a minute - he looks at you with such a strange expression on his face, you canât comprehend it. he looks so young and vulnerable and alive, you canât imagive, how heâs not a human. and how much you want him by your side.
âyesâ he says quietely, voice not above just a whisper âyes, you canâ
***
your son is eleven, when his... father decides to show up.
and you think, why would it end differently? of course thereâs always a way to ruin it for you. last few years was the best you ever had in your life, so something needs to change to show you, how are you not actually in charge.
your life became just a little bit too perfect. it consisted of you, scaramouche and your son having a breakfast together, then you stay to study with your son, while scaramouche works in a garden, because you canât do hard work, so your health wonât worsen. later you usually go for a walk to a shrine or at the seacost. youâve visited countless festivals and watched fireworks together. in evenings you still listen to scaramoucheâs stories, and then you say goodnight to your son, so you can to bed together. years later, you still only sleep together. he likes to kiss you, yeah, but nothing more. youâre fine. youâre not sure your body wonât betray you anyway.
so of course it has to be ruined.
and this prick - you really canât even bring yourself to call him a father of your beautiful, kind, sweet son - shows up looking exactly like youâve seen him last time. you know time flies, and youâre fine with you aging, yet it feels like a slap in a face. youâve never felt this way with scaramouche, even though he too, obviously, doesnât change a bit.
give me my son, that prick says. you did everything iâve wanted from you. now itâs time for me to teach my son how he needs to be.
your blood boils with such rage, you think youâve never been able to feel this much. you remember how one morning he just never returned, and later you found out you were pregnant. how much you cried, feeling horror almost in your bones, and how high priestess said that if you decide to keep the child, best case scenario itâll take a good half of your life. the decision wasnât up to you anyway. it was late, and you made peace with the fact that you will probably die soon.
did you really think iâll just leave my son be with you, he asks, not really wanting you answer.Â
fuck you. scaramouche is his father, you think stubbornly. and, also, fuck you again.
he says, heâll return back when your kid will turn twelve, and heâll ask if he stays with you or go with him. he will know that man who raised him never was his father, and heâll hate you for it.Â
and maybe if you were stupid young self, you would listen to him. you would dread the date and think a hundred times over how to tell your son that... how to tell him anything. you would cry because your son might turn into his father, hurting more and more people, without the possibility for this cycle to break.
now youâre smarter.Â
you see thereâs a lot of foxes near your house. your son sits at a table, focused on a book scaramoche presented him just a week ago. itâs a book from nahida, so itâs very special. scaramouche is nowhere to be seen - heâs probably in city, buying stuff you need. your heart aches for how heartbroken he will be.
foxes get closer to your son. be it your young self, you would cry out of horror.
but now youâre smarter.Â
so you take your sonâs hand and just run.
***
you hide with your son for five years, when you meet nahida.
your son is first to pinpoint her in the crowd. people moving and dancing around you, thereâs smell of hot spice and something sweet in the air, the sun is so hot and red. you change regions frequently, you need to, but natlan so far is the least favourite of yours. you hate how loud it is, how hot it is. thereâs no serenity in those lands, only war and feasts.
ânahida? nahida!â your sonâs voice helps you to snap out of it. you feel something between panic and excitement.
there she is: still so small and young, an adult in a kidâs body. youâr afraid people might hurt her. but she moves right towards you, her gaze stoic and unwavering.
ânahida!â your son kneels so he can hug her and she does immediately hug him back, her little hands look even smaller on his back. your son is not very tall, rather lean and not so broad. he reminds you of a fox - the only one you wonât hate.
âiâm so glad to see you. itâs been so longâ you blame yourself for longing in his voice. you took everything from him too.
âhow have you been?â she asks him, holding his face with her hands. he smiles widely.
âweâre fine. wanna talk to mom? i thought you like me betterâ she finally giggles and pats him on a head.
âweâll have plenty of a time to talk. but yes, i need to talk to your motherâ
you canât let go of your habits that easily - all those years you spend watching your son every moment, so no one would steal him from you. nahida sees that, she was always capable of seeing through people.
âi wonder what it takes to be able to hide from everyone, even from the goddess of wisdomâ she starts.Â
you sigh.
âyou wouldnât want to knowâ
âi always wanna knowâ she argues âi canât believe i was finally able to find you. weâve all tried to find youâ
âplease, donât torture me like that. please.â
she gets quiet for a moment.
âyou look sickâ itâs because you are sick. there was no peace in your life, not a second since you were on a run. you donât age like normal humans, not after given a birth to yokai, yet sometimes you wish you just get grey hair and thatâs it. your body hurts all the time, so much, sometimes you canât sit straight. âi told you years ago, if you donât watch yourself you will-â
âdonât careâ
âbut i do. your son does.â you know who else does too, probably. âcan you at least tell me, what happened? i canât help you if-â
âno one can help me.â
âi think we might argue about thatâ she gets closer to you and takes your hand into hers. you immediately feel strange relief, as if something very heavy was taken off your shoulders. âtell me. we will find a way. i, as an archon of wisdom, will find a way for youâ
thereâs sunset, and music gets louder, people start dancing again. your son looks at you, his lips trembling. you so, so want to go back to your home in a dark forest.Â
âplease, momâ he whispers, almost inaudible. âletâs returnâ
the ghost of his father still haunts you at nights, but with years passing your horror started to fade away. thereâs no way somebody was able to make your son someone different. he loved you deeply, yet you knew he judged you for not saying anyone a word.Â
he looked so much like scaramouche sometimes, it brought you to a physical pain. he frowned like him, his smile was just as mischievous and fond as his, he liked to read, liked to watch fireworks and work in garden. he was so softspoken even when he was hurt or angry.
thereâs no way he could be like anyone but his father.
you blink once, twice, feeling tears sting your eyes.Â
and start speaking.
***
youâre with kazuha in mondstadt year later, when scaramouche steps in your rented room.
âthere you areâ is all he says. you almost jump off the chair, turning to him immediately.
âiâll leave you twoâ kazuha stands up and winks at you. âgood luckâ
traitor.
what you expected to see? scaramouche looks exactly like six years ago, still young and lean, though he looks much, much darker now. his clothes are from the way back, when he dressed in black and turqiuose, but now it has more purple to it. the bells on his veil dangle dangerously.
"letâs summarize what we have hereâ he says as if nothing happened, as if you havenât seen him for so long. âinstead of talking to me and just saying you need some help, you decided to run away and hide for years, am i right?â
âit wasnât like thatâ
âoh? tell me how it was thenâ
you have no words. you knew he would be mad, thatâs why you begged nahida not to tell him anything. nahida said okay. and there was kazuha, who didnât say anything, when you tried to ask for his promise to stay silent.
he probably did it for your son. he wanted to see him so much, it became hard to keep him low.
âi hear nothingâ the venom in his voice almost burns you.
âi couldnât say anything. he would take my son awayâ
âhe wouldnâtâ
you smile sadly. you still feel heavy in your stomach, your back hurts.
âhe wouldâ you repeat, and for the first time scaramouche looks less mad. âwhen i returned home, after i found out i was pregnant, he followed me. i didnât know that. and when i told my family i needed help, well...â
he looks at you expectantly. you feel so cold in your limbs.
âwhat did he do?â he asks you, way calmly this time.
âmy yonger sister, she... she went out one day and never came back. my parents searched everywhere, nothing. and week later another girl. and anotherâ
he stays silent, yet you see how he clenches his fists so much, you hear that sweet, sweet sound of creaking joints. you canât smile anymore.Â
âi know it was him.â you say simply. âthereâs no evidence. i donât know what he did to them. i hope they hadnât suffered and died quickly, because he enjoys... he loves to play.â
âi killed himâ he says matter-of-factly. you feel cold sweat on your back with how calm and lifeless he looks. âhe broke the rules anyway. so i did what i had to doâ.
âwhat rules are you talking about? how did you even found him?â
âi asked my motherâ that surprises you. âsee, i could, of course, just kill him in silence. but the forest belongs to yokai. there are rules. kitsune canât really mess with humans that much anymore. apparently, that made everyoneâs life difficult, and it was not easy to lure him in... long story short, heâs dead. he wonât bother you anymore.â
âyou asked your mother?â
now he looked nervous.
âi had to. i needed help to track him down. this is her land. she knows where he could hide, since sheâs yokai herselfâ you remember all the times he spoke to you about his family, his mothers or his sister. he rarely did this, granted, yet it pains you even more to hear him going through it alone.
âare you okay?â
âyou kidding?â he looks at you, bewildered âthatâs what you choose to ask me?!â
âi donât know what else to askâ you asnwer truthfully.Â
you see the gnosis on his chest starts to shine - he closes it with his hand, as if his heart hurt. you know he has no heart. youâve never heard his heartbeat.
suddenly the door slams open.
thereâs kazuha with your son, standing in front door. kazuha took him under his wing, helping you hide him, because thereâs no such place as the ocean, and though kitsune usually hate water, your son loved it. youâve seen him only yestersay, thinking heâs already on a ship, which is now under kazuhaâs command.
but it seems like everything goes not how you expected today.
you see so much emotions on scaramoucheâs face. from surprise and joy to sadness and anger. heâs angry at you, because youâve stolen him of those years he could spent near you and your kid, like a family that you were. you see, that itâll take time for him to forgive you for those years he lost, net seeing your son growing up, changing and become who he is now. theyâre the same height now, the eyes of your son are still bright red and kind, but not at all naive. heâll only learn now, how simillar they look, when they get angry, or how their sense of humour is basically the same. they look nothing alike, and yet it was your son and his behaviour who reminded you always of what youâve left behind. and youâre so sorry too.
youâre so, so sorry you hurt them both.
and then scaramouche smiles - widely, so fond and kind, like years ago.
âso grown up now, you donât even want to give me a hug?â he says, only half-joking. heâs testing waters, if he could take what was his once back.
your son runs towards him in a second.
kazuha pats your back reassuringly, as if saying that itâs going to be okay now. youâre sure youâve never seen scaramouche cry. itâs just tears down his face, as he smiles and hugs your son tighter. and you actually now know, what you want to ask.
can you return home?
***
itâs almost twenty five years after you first meet scaramouche, when you finally can say youâve found peace.
scaramouche chuckles, when you say that to him, as if you said something really funny.
âyour standarts are still really lowâ he says, and you nod thoughtfully.
âyeah. iâm living with you at the end of the dayâ
he glares at you, but says nothing. youâve learnt a lot from him in those years, so now he keeps his mouth shut.
when you first returned to your home in a forest, you were too busy bringing it back itâs cozy view. it was still not as abandoned, as you imagined. kazuha told you, scaramouche returned here regularly, hoping to meet you here one day.Â
it took him a year to become less paranoid. you could understand that, since you too couldnât really let go of the feeling that youâre free to do what you want. finally, what you want. not what you need. nahida took your son to sumeru, to help him become more independent, and you? you were truly all for youself, the first time in your life.
âwhat is going on inside that brain of yours now?â scaramouche asks you impatiently. you only smile in response.
âthatâs a secretâ
âugh. disgustingâ he holds you closer, eyes sparkling with mischief âtell meâ
you look at him and canât not smile. heâs so beautiful in your eyes. you could never understand, how he switches so easily between being angsty teen brat and a centuries old wise son of a god. you think that that sounds right, because only a god could create someone so endearing and loving and vulnerable and brave-
âyouâre doing it againâ
âdoing what?â
âdrifting offâ he says seriously. âwhatâs on your mind?â
whatâs on your mind? your son was no longer there, so you couldnât tell yourself scaramouche was here only for him. however much he loved him, it was stupid to stay in denial. you couldnât afford that anymore.
âdo you love me?â you ask him. he looks surprised for a second, but collects himself very quickly.
âof course not. i just enjoy spending years of my life near somebody i hateâ
âyou would love that. you easily could do that out of spite, donât lie.â
âyou know me so wellâ he retorts sarcastically, but stops himself, seeing your face âwhy you asking stupid questions?â
âbecause i want moreâ
he stays silent, and you hate how sometimes you truly canât say, what heâs thinking right now.
âokay letâs forget-â
âyouâve seen me nakedâ he starts cautiously. that you did. âiâm not human. i am a puppet at the end of the day.â
âdo i look like somebody who would spend years of their life living with a puppet and suddenly find out that yeah, i might actually care that said puppet has no dick?â he coughs, as you quirk your eyebrow. âyeah, exactlyâ
âbut can you imagine my mother designing my dick?â he asks in the most flat tone, his face unreadable. you canât help but cackle. the corner of his mouth twitches, as if he tries to supress a smile. âthat fox bitch definitely could though.â
âmaybe itâs for the best she was stoppedâ
âprobably, yeahâ
you want to say to him, heâs not a puppet, he should stop thinking of himself like that, but you know it would just anger him, if anything. he was always realistic. he was a puppet. with his own mind, his thoughts, desires, feelings. he was just...like that.
and the thing is, even with your inexperience, you know, that there are definitely more skilled men in a block. maybe you could even snatch one for a good night, but you donât want to, genuinely. you never did. you want this puppet - you want him - and there all it is to it.
so when he finally gives in and kisses you, rolling on his back so you would be on top of him, you can only sigh. he sits up and puts your hair from your face with quiet, yet so fond smile, you can feel your heart breaking your ribs.
âyouâre so beautifulâ he whispers, while looking you straight in the eyes âalways were and always will beâ
you kiss him with desire you refuse to ignore any longer.Â
heâs definitely not the most expirienced either, but what he lacks with skill he makes up to with his patience and tenderness. he has to be gentle because of how fragile your health is, so he tries to do that exactly. his smile so innocent, almost angelic, if only it wasnât for the devilish sparks in his eyes, that lit up when you whine his name. you quickly decide, that you both love that. that, and how cool his skin feels under your touch, especially when he kisses your neck, while telling you to lift yourself a bit. you shiver in anticipation and yet still moan, when you feel the first finger inside. you donât see his face, but you know that now he must be smiling like a stupid arrogant brat that he is.
and yet, his fingers feel so good, you clench on his shoulders with such force you fear you can break him. he only shushes you, his other hand patting your back, mouth never leaves your neck for long. he fucks you slow and steadily, keeping you in place, so you donât move and heâs the one deciding the pace. even when you beg him to go faster, he only kisses you lovingly and continues to torture you with slow deep thrusts. you hate him for it, but not really.
you come with his name on your lips, and he keeps fucking you through it, so tenderly you feel tears in your eyes. to your surprise, you feel something wet on your neck too.
âscaramouche?â you ask worriedly, lifting his face with your hands so you can look at him properly. âare you okay?â
his eyes are glassy, and his cheeks are wet with tears, but youâve learned a long ago that his tears are the only way showing anything of his emotions. and even though he cries, thatâs not all to it.
âiâm greatâ he chuckles and kisses your shoulder, as you ruffle his hair âbetter than i have ever beenâ.
***
itâs winter, when you talk to scaramouche abouth death.
you have always dodged this topic elegantly. nahida told you, now decades ago, that your life wonât be long, nor that it would be joyful. scaramouche argued with her on that, but you silently agree with her. your life was on a thread the minute you felt your son in you. you canât believe heâs so mature now, even though he still looks like a teen boy. and while scaramouche doesnât visit his mothers ever, your son did visit his mom once. he later stayed in her shrine for about a year, learning from her, since she was, in scaramoucheâs words, a knowledgeable bitch.Â
but it wasnât you and your condition, that triggered that talk.
kazuha dies so suddenly, it leaves everyone in shock. of course he was an old man now, but still you hadnât expect it. youâre sure, if it was up to scaramouche or nahida, they would try to save him, but he just... dies in his sleep, thatâs kind of it. the most peaceful, most kind death one could ever imagine. your heart roars in loss when you hear the news, your son cries in his bed when he learns his favourite unckle wonât ever return. he was your friend, the best friend of your small family, his kindness saved you the day you wanted to die - losing him feels worse than losing an arm. even nahida, who, you know, is very, very reserved, canât help but shed a few tears.
only scaramouche stays stoic. even months after, you donât really talk about how he lost another human that he loved dearly.Â
you lay in bed together, your face in his neck, while he stares at a ceiling, swirling a strand of your hair between his fingers.Â
âyou're angryâ you whisper. you know he is. you know his fears all too well now.
but he surprises you.
ânoâ he says quietely. ânot reallyâ
âhuh?!â
âif it was me, say, hundred years ago, i would be so pissed with himâ he says with a smile - not his usual arrogant one, something different. âthat would make me so mad, i would probably find a way to bring him back alive just to kill him myself for that. but i think i get it now. huh. we really do change through our lives, donât we?â
you donât know what to answer to that, so you just lay there silently.
âi asked nahida to turn my head off, when you dieâ
this is such a shock, you stand up on your elbows to look at him. but he looks back at you - calmly and peaceful.
âwhat did you just say?â
âi said, i asked nahida to turn me off, when you die.â he scoffs softly and caresses your hand gently. âbecause you will die, y/n. like i said, i get it know. itâs not something you canât decide not to do. yet i can decide what to do with myself. and six hundred years is more than enoughâ
âyou canât just decide to kill yourselfâ you whisper in shock, ânahida wonât do that, she wonât do that to youâ he looks at you in surprise, but then smiles.
âoh, itâs not like that. she just... sheâll change the things in my head, i donât know. sheâs way better with tech, than me. so one day iâll just stop working, i guess.â itâs impossible to you how he smiles dreamily, how content he looks âhuh, i donât know for how long iâll walk on this land after you, but iâm looking forward to find it out.â
âwhat about our son?â and there it is, the only pain he lets himself have.
ânahida will take care of it. and, like i said, i wonât be gone in a blink of an eye. iâll take care of him myself too. i guess, iâll just finally have a life iâve always dreamt aboutâ he again turns to you and smiles fondly âi had a purpose and i fullfilled it. that would be a normal human life. have i ever told you? i once wanted to become a god. now i want nothing, but to become a mortal.â
you know itâs useless to argue with him, but you try to keep in mind that he really is centuries old. you would never know what it feels like to be this old. and to think of it - you donât really want to find out. you see the example right before your eyes, how lonely it can be.
âyou look so worriedâ
âi feel like iâve been bamboozeledâ
âoh, you definitely have beenâ he laughs and puts you near himself, so he can kiss your forehead. âbut letâs use what we have now yeah?â you nod and he smiles wider, while rolling you on your back, so he can be on top of you. he looks so smug doing it you canât help but scoff.Â
âalright thenâ he kisses your nose lovingly, and you giggle again. âhold on my shoulders, lady. weâre gonna take a wild ride.â

Said I wouldn't, did it anyway. Wrote a 4 x 16 coda, and @rmd-writes is going to write the companion piece, to be posted soon. Thanks to @celeritas2997 for your help and expert guidance.
all is near and can't be touched | T | 3,800
âBeing in love with you could never feel like an obligation, TK,â Carlos says patiently, his fingers tracing over the shell of TKâs ear and threading into his hair. âThatâs not how it feels. Itâs never felt like that.â âHow does it feel then?â TK asks, his voice barely a whisper, lost in the tiny expanse of space between them, swallowed up by the dark. âIt canât be that great right now.â Carlos smiles softly, lingering sadness written into the corners of his lips. âBeing in love with you isnât just a feeling, baby,â he murmurs. âBeing in love is an action, and itâs a choice. I choose to love you, in sickness and in health, no matter what.â âThat makes it sound hard,â TK breathes, sinking into the feeling of Carlosâ fingertips on his scalp, as if theyâre touching his heart. Carlos shakes his head, just slightly. âI think thatâs what makes love beautiful,â he says. âWithout choice, love doesnât bind us. Itâs an illusion; itâs not real.â

Can You Learn to Sew Online? A Comprehensive Look at Your Options with ONSA
At ONSA - Online Sewing Academy, the world of stitching and garment construction should be accessible to everyone, regardless of location or schedule. In today's digital age, online learning has revolutionized how we acquire new skills, making it possible to master intricate crafts like sewing from the comfort of our homes. But can you truly become an expert stitcher through virtual classes alone? Let's explore the options available and how ONSA empowers you to embark on an enriching sewing journey.
The Beauty of Pre-Recorded Video Lessons
Ah, the world of pre-recorded tutorials - a treasure trove of knowledge at your fingertips! ONSA's extensive library of meticulously crafted video lessons offers a comprehensive exploration of sewing techniques, from the fundamentals of threading a needle to the intricacies of advanced garment construction. One of the most significant advantages of this format is the ability to learn at your own pace, rewinding and revisiting lessons as many times as needed until each stitch and seam becomes second nature.
Our pre-recorded videos are thoughtfully designed to cater to diverse learning styles, combining visual demonstrations with clear, concise explanations. Whether you're a visual learner who thrives on observing each step or an auditory learner who appreciates detailed verbal guidance, our lessons ensure that no aspect of the sewing process is left unexplained.
While budget-friendly and convenient, we understand that pre-recorded content may lack the human interaction that many pupils crave â the ability to ask questions, receive real-time feedback, and benefit from the personalized attention of an experienced instructor. This is where our live, interactive classes come into play.

Our live, online classes provide an immersive, interactive experience replicating the intimacy of a physical classroom setting. One of the most significant advantages of live classes at ONSA is the ability to learn at a pace that suits your individual needs. Our instructors are adept at adapting their teaching methods to accommodate varying skill levels, ensuring that every student feels included and supported. Whether you're a complete novice taking your first tentative stitches or a skilled stitcher seeking to elevate your art, our talented teachers can customize lesson plans to align with your unique goals and aspirations.
From mastering the art of inserting invisible zippers to acquiring advanced draping skills for haute couture designs, our live classes cover various topics, catering to hobbyists and aspiring professionals. Private one-on-one sessions and small group workshops provide ample opportunity for personalized guidance, fostering an environment where questions are welcomed, and challenges are addressed with patience and expertise.
The ONSA Edge: A Holistic Approach to Sewing Education
At ONSA, we understand that sewing is more than just a practical skill â it's an art form that combines technical precision with creative expression. Our approach to online sewing education is rooted in this philosophy, nurturing both the technical and artistic aspects of this timeless craft.
Our team of expert instructors, each with years of industry experience and a passion for teaching, has thoughtfully crafted a multifaceted curriculum that covers the entire spectrum of sewing, from understanding fabric properties and pattern drafting to mastering advanced construction techniques and exploring fashion design principles.
By combining our comprehensive library of pre-recorded video resources with live, interactive sessions, ONSA provides a 360-degree learning experience tailored to your schedule, skillset, and aspirations. Whether you prefer the convenience of self-paced learning or thrive on the dynamic energy of a virtual classroom, our blend of educational formats ensures that your sewing journey is enriching, engaging, and tailored to your unique needs.
Beyond the technical aspects of sewing, ONSA also emphasizes the importance of nurturing creativity and self-expression. Our lessons encourage students to experiment with fabric choices, color combinations, and design elements, fostering an environment where individuality is celebrated and personal style is cultivated.

Mushroom Soup for the Soul
Fire Emblem Awakening | Rating: GÂ | Character Focus: Frederick, F!Robin | Ship(s):Â Fredsumia, F!Chrobin
Frederick teaches Robin to cook, but when he asks what piqued her interest in pursuing his guidance, they end up discussing love versus duty.
Companion piece to Companions in Clumsiness
[Read on AO3!]
While she didnât remember any of her life until meeting Chrom, Robin retained many skills under her belts. She, of course, was a fine tactician, a skilled mage, and was even a budding swordsman. Her interests held steadfast, as wellâher passion for reading and chess, alongside her disdain for early mornings and excessive physical activity, all manifested in some way throughout her daily affairs. Cooking was an anomaly though, a task she held little passion for but was eager to learn to better serve herself and her fellow Shepherds. Plus, she didnât want to end up completely helpless, should such a scenario arise where she was dependent only on herself.
Or on the many Shepherds still fed from a silver spoon.
During her game meat-eating training sessions with Frederick, she suggested different ways game could be cooked to make it more palatable, but admitted she had no cooking skills of her own to even attempt such a feat. She spoke of her interest in learning, and Frederick insisted he be the one to teach her, if only partly to make working up to bear meat a little more tolerable. As a bonus, they considered the lessons an opportunity to grow their friendship, too. They were rarely paired out on the battlefield, with Robin usually paired with Chrom or Gaius, and Frederick with Sumia or Lissa. Plus, with Frederick usually running around performing all kinds of duties to keep operations running smoothly, and with Robin working out battle strategies well ahead of time, they rarely had moments of respite to aquatint themselves further.
This eveningâs course was a creamy mushroom soup, as Robin had recently learned of Frederickâs interest in foraging. He had done the honors of collecting the ingredients and preparing the vegetable stock prior. (He made sure to recite the recipe for the stock, but noted that it was fairly simple to prepare in advance.) Left for Robin was simply washing, dicing, and combining the ingredients. Simple enough! she thought.
Well, the washing certainly was.
âAh, Robin, remember to hold your knife like so,â he demonstrated as he spoke, âas choking up on the blade gives you more control over the motion.â
âLike this?â She adjusted her hand position, her forefinger resting on top of the blade. âEr, wait noââ
âIf I may,â he asked permission, and she hummed in approval. Frederick adjusted her finger so it was gripping around the knife instead. âThis gives you more ample control of the knifeâs motion, keeping it from swiveling from beneath you. It is not unlike proper weapon technique; you do not want your foe to disarm you with a flimsy grip.â She nodded. âAnd nowâŠâ
He returned to his own knife and chopped the onion with quick, circular motions. His left hand was splayed out like a spider to stabilize his knife work, his fingertips tucked safely beneath his knuckles.
âYou see?â
âYeah, I think so!â she said tentatively. She chopped slowly, adjusting to the unfamiliar motions, but quickly got into a rhythm. Her cuts were a bit uneven, but her technique showed promise. With a bit of practice, Frederick assured her, sheâd be an expert in no time. He had seen how quick she was to improve her swordsmanship on the battlefield; surely a chefâs knife would be no trouble at all.
As Robin diligently continued her chopping, adding garlic and mushrooms to the mix, Frederick rummaged around the wares storage. He located the Valentian oven, his favorite cast iron cooking vessel, giving it an affirming nod and a small smile. He hooked it over the campfire, stoking the flames so they licked up the sides of the oven, heating it thoroughly.
âThe Valentian oven does a marvelous job at regulating temperatureâmore so, I would say, than a ceramic vessel. It tolerates the high heat of the flames far more reliably, as well,â he explained. âNow that youâre finished, we can add a bit of cowâs butter and sautĂ© the onions and garlic together.
Frederick went silent as he observed Robin thoughtfully, his careful breaths unheard over the sizzle of the sautéing aromatics.
âIf I may be so bold to reaffirm,â his voice broke the silence, âwhy did you want to learn cooking skills again? You mentioned briefly that, âOne of us has to!â but I cannot imagine in what scenario you and milord would find yourself without myself or any stewards arouââ
âHold on,â she interrupted, straightening her back and pausing her stirring briefly. âWho said anything about Chrom? I sure didnât.â Her voice was shaky, but she turned back to watch the pot, though her eyes were unfocused.
He frowned, his eyebrows knitting together with concern. âForgive me for my bold presumptions, but are you and milordâŠÂ not courting?â
Now her cheeks mirrored the ferocity of the fire in both heat and color. âFrederick, by the gods, what would ever give you that idea?!â
Frederick dismissed her questioning briefly to add mushrooms to the pot. âNow, roast the mushrooms with the aromatics for approximately ten minutesâ time, stirring occasionally to allow all the mushrooms to have an equal time on direct heat and soften.â
Compartmentalizing her thoughts proved easier in battle than now, but she tried her damndest to focus on the mushrooms than Frederickâs insinuation.
âTo answer your question, Robin,â Frederick continued, Robin uttering a small groan, âbut you two share many knowing glances with each other, many intimate and overt touches. When I adjusted your hand, your face remained curious and professionalâthis is not so when milord assists you on the training grounds with your sword technique.â
She glared, and her response oozed venom. âYou touched my hand as a test of my purported affections for Chrom?â
âNo, merely an observation to provide an example,â he replied cooly.
âWell, we are not, as a matter of fact, courting in the slightest. Chrom is my closest companion, and besides, heâs the general and I am his chief tactician. It just⊠wouldnât be right,â she insisted, a sadness replacing the anger in her tone. âI would never forgive myself if my feelings caused me to make poor calls on the battlefieldâand Chrom would be beside himself, too. You understand, donât you? I mean, isnât that why you havenât courted Sumia yet?â
His face flushed at her accusation. âIâerâwell, I cannot compare the scenarios exactly. Milord is the prince of this realm, after all, and is of age where he is expected to wed within the coming years. On the contrary, I am a knight, and will always be a knight, and my duty is first and foremost to the royal family.â
She laughed incredulously, punctuating with a small snort. âAnd you think that the prince of Ylisse would be allowed to take an amnesiac foreigner as his wife? Itâs bad enough he made her his chief tacticianâI mean, even you mistrusted me through countless battles.â
âI only had milord Chrom and milady Lissaâs safety in mind when we first met,â he snapped, his frown drooping further to his chin. âAnd now I must consider milordâs happinessââ
âJust like youâre considering Sumiaâs happiness, hm?â He winced. âShe is absolutely over the moon to spend time with you, and yet your duty to the royals and the Shepherds comes first. So does mine. And besidesâlike I said, Iâm some amnesiac you found asleep on the side of the road. Do you really think some foreigner of dubious origins is fit to court the prince of the realm? For his sake, heâd be far better off with a prudent noble like Maribelle, or even continue to improve Feroxi relations with Olivia.â She stirred the mushrooms aggressively.
âThe people of Ylisse could never mistrust you as much as I once did,â he growled.
âWhat a ringing endorsement, Frederick,â she spat.
âThat is not how I intended my words,â he grumbled, his attention brought to her near destructive stirring. âWe should add the stock now.â
Robin glanced down at the oven, blinking rapidly as if waking up from a dream. âRight. Weâre cooking,â she said matter-of-factly. She stood up quickly, brushing by Frederick with little regard to him and reached for the stockpot and ladle. She added the stock slowly and methodically, careful to not spill any into the fire. âHow long?â
His tone equally dry, he replied, âAbout fifteen minutesâ time with this. Stir occasionally, to ensure the ingredients do not stick to the oven.â
âGot it.â
âNow then,â he continued, firmer this time, âwhat I meant was that even if milord were to take you as his wife, you have already succeeded in gaining my trust. I do not give such trust lightly, especially when it comes to protecting the royal family. There are many members of the Shepherds who have yet to gain my faith in them.â
An, âOh,â escaped her lips breathlessly. âThat is quite the compliment from Frederick the Wary.â
âIndeed. And you deserve to be showered with more, considering your skill and dedication in serving the realm,â he explained. âHowever, I am not here to pucker my lips against your buttocks.â
Laughter jetted from her nostrils. âThen why bother in the first place?â
âRobin, it is painfully evident that you captivate milord. If you were to spurn his affections, I am unsure if Iâd be able to see you in such a favorable light,â he said grimly.
âFrederick, he has yet to even approach his feelings with me! Hell, last week in the bathing tentâerââ
Frederickâs eyebrows shot up. âThe bathing tent? Robin, your sense of propriety, please!â
âWhâit wasnât like that!â The burning of her cheeks was almost painful. âEr, never mind. The point is, Chrom has not expressed anything to me directly. Hell, he might even think weâre just good friends!â
âMmm. Despite your closeness, I have known and observed milord for far longer than you. His affections for you rival none, despite his many, many admirers, both romantic and platonic,â he admitted, a feather-light dusting of pink to his cheeks. âAs milordâs former closest confidant, and as a,â he sucked in a heavy breath, âfriend⊠to you both, I implore you toâstir again, the mushrooms are sticking to the sides!â
âHuh? âŠOh!â She stirred, digging at the sides of the oven to scrape any clinging mushrooms.
âI implore you to allow yourself to court milord, if that is what you both desire,â he finished.
âI donât know⊠Iâit just. It wouldnât beââ
He cut her off. âIâve said my piece. I only want you to consider it for both milordâs happiness,â his expression softened, âand your own.â
âWe donât know how this war is going to end,â she muttered. âWhat if something awful happens, what if Iâwhat if someone hurts him?â Her free hand gripped the bridge of her nose in frustration.
Frederick reached for the cream to add to the soup, slowly adding it as Robin stirred it in. âWhat if something good comes amidst the war? You would do well to read more of milady Sumiaâs romance novels. They might inspire your next course of action.â
At that, Robin burst into laughter, her face still miserably warm, and pushed him aside playfully. âOh gods, Frederick, she got you on those too?â
âNo, but I cannot deny her the opportunity to recite them in full detail during our lengthy marches. It passes the time in the most delightful manner,â he said with a smileâone not unlike the smile he has when Chrom sings his praises, though with an uncharacteristic softness.
âI never thought Iâd ever describe you as adorable butâŠâ she snickered, âit seems I have been proven wrong.â
His blush made its way up to the tip of his ears as Robinâs snarky grin widened.
âTh-Thatâs notââ he stammered. âIâm notâerââ
âFrederick, if youâre telling me to pursue Chrom despite our very different social standings and birth origins, and despite the war and our leadership roles in the army, the least you could do is not be a hypocrite. At least you and Sumia are similar in that regard! I mean, youâre the royal familyâs most trusted knight, sheâs a noble and knight, youâre both Ylissean, you both have all of your memories from before you metâŠâ Youâd never hurt her, she wanted to add. She winced as she remembered her nightmare just before meeting Chromâthe only memory she had at all prior to meeting him, and she still wasnât sure why or how.
âRobin, are you alright?â His voice welled with concern as her eyes glazed with anxiety. âRobin!â
âAh!â She snapped to attention. âAnyway, if youâre insistent on me and Chrom, then Iâm afraid I must be more insistent on you and Sumia. Itâs only fair, since we both have the army and Ylisseâs best interests at heart. It would be a shame to spurn the affections of a fellow Shepherd you care so deeply about.â
âMmm, I suppose⊠you do have a rather sound rebuttal thereâŠâ
âWhat? You werenât supposed to agree with me!â she squawked. âWhat happened to the most dutiful, dedicated knight in the halidom putting his duties first?â She gasped when she realized how aggressive she was with the spoon, smooshing the mushrooms. âO-oh gods, I am so sorryâŠâ
Frederick chuckled. âAh! Donât be, youâre already on to the next step: pulverizing the mushrooms so as to blend it into liquid.â
She allowed a relieved sigh to escape her lips, continuing her work on destroying the mushrooms.
âI thought youâd be on my side if I turned this around on you, FrederickâŠâ she continued. âDuty, social standing, the roles we play⊠donât they all come before matters of the heart?â
He furrowed his brow. âI did not wholeheartedly agree with your apparently false rebuttal! I merely said it was sound! I take the utmost pride and dedication in serving milord, and he absolutely comes first. However, you are attempting to justify spurning milordâs affections.â
Robinâs eyes darted away from his piercing gaze. He was right. But if he knew how she had killed Chrom in her nightmares each time she slept, heâd cleave her with his own axe.
Her mashing became erratic in her anxiety, but there was so little left to blend, she was merely sloshing around the liquid.
Frederick steadied his hand on her shoulder.
His tone was firm, but lacked his usual commanding edge. âThat should be plenty, Robin. Give it some time to meld the flavors together more and itâll be done.â
She sighed as she lifted the spoon from the pot, watching the soup drip from the sides. âIâm sorry.â
âThere is naught for which to apologize. The soup is complete.â He nodded.
âNo I meanââ
âYou donât need to apologize. I believe it was you who pointed out how duty-bound we both are. We are sworn to protect the people of Ylisse, the royal family, ourâŠâ he hesitated, âmost cherished companions.â
âYeah,â she replied with a tentative smile.
âNow then, I believe we have a meal to serve! Prepare the bowls and I will alert our dinner guests.â
